Causes 2013 + 2014

The Peace in the Park planning team is excited to announce the two causes they will be supporting at this year’s event – ASSIST, who work with asylum seekers and Roundabout, who provide shelter, support and life skills to young homeless people.

Peace in the Park, Sheffield’s free community arts festival, is celebrating its 10th anniversary this year. Each year there is a heady mix of live music , showcasing upcoming bands from across the area, alongside stalls, children’s activities, foods from around the world and hands-on workshops. This year the festival will be returning to the Ponderosa in Netherthorpe, on Saturday 8 June. 12pm to 9pm.

Each year Peace in the Park supports two causes, chosen by the planning team, to receive all of the donations collected on the day, as well as being given a platform to spread the word about themselves. Last year’s causes, CRESST and Names Not Numbers, each received a cheque for £1500.

The first cause being supported this year, ASSIST, describe themselves as, “a Sheffield-based charity supporting destitute asylum seekers. Peace in the Park previously supported us in 2007. We still support around 60 people each week with money, subsidised bus passes, about half in accommodation, and others in our night shelter; and give signposting information and access to solicitors etc. to about 20-30 people each week. The other help in Sheffield to which we can refer people includes free bicycles and a range of free food, services and activities.”

In response to being chosen for this year’s event, Catarina Thomas from ASSIST said, “It is an honour to be one of Peace in the Park’s sponsored causes this year. The need for help has never been greater – our shelter for asylum seekers is full every night. Any money raised will make a vital contribution to our work in the future. Peace in the Park is always one of our favourite festivals and we are looking forward to helping make it another great event this year.”

We provide accommodation for homeless young people at our emergency hostel and support young people to live independently in secure bedsits and in shared housing throughout the city. Roundabout also offers young people a comprehensive programme of training and involvement which breaks the cycle of homelessness and develops long term independent living skills.”

Upon hearing the news of the selection for this year, Amy Casbolt, Fundraising Co-ordinator at Roundabout said, “We are delighted to have been chosen, along with ASSIST as the charities for this year’s Peace in the Park. This exciting event will enable us to raise our profile in the city, and valuable funds for the renovation of our emergency hostel for young homeless people.”
